NYC Bagel Success:
Saeed Anwar said he’d long wanted to open a restaurant and after researching the matter decided Burlington needed a new shop that specialized in fresh bagels.
Anwar is planning to remedy that, his franchised business, New York City Bagel & Sandwich Shop, scheduled to open the first week of May at 3261 S. Church St. in the Southwood Square Shopping Center. The building is undergoing a significant remodeling.
Anwar is anything but your stereotypical restaurant owner. He’s a native of Pakistan who moved to the United States in 2010. Anwar said in Pakistan he was a doctor who specialized in internal medicine. For the past five years he’s worked as a senior technologist with LabCorp.
Since living in the United States, Anwar has also helped his brother in the restaurant business. His brother, who moved to the United States in 2001, owns Pizzeria Grill & Subs at 1524 E. Market St. in Greensboro. Anwar said he’s learned much about the business from that experience.
Anwar said he visited existing New York Bagel restaurants in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia before committing to the franchise.
“I was fully satisfied,” he said.
There are NYC Bagel franchises up and down the East Coast, including ones in Mooresville and Huntersville in North Carolina. The company says more are planned for the state, including restaurants planned for Fayetteville and Gastonia.
Anwar said he’s proud of the food offered at NYC Bagel, with bagel options from pumpernickel to apple crunch. Fresh fruit and parfaits are on the menu and the meats are Boar’s Head products. Gluten-free menu items are also included.
Hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays.
